Wa-Nee Community Schools Superintendent Joe Sabo announced Roelandts’ retirement at the Board of School Trustees meeting on Monday, April 8, and praised Roelandts for his work in the district.
“George has been in education for over 40 years and spent most of that time in the Wa-Nee district,” Sabo said.
Roelandts served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1972 and began teaching industrial technology in Twin Lakes in 1975, where he worked until 1979.
He worked at Polk Lincoln from 1979 to 1980, Wakarusa Middle School from 1980 to 1982, Baugo Community Schools from 1982 to 1984 and Wakarusa Middle School from 1984 to 1986.
In 1986, he became the principal at Wakarusa Middle School and held that position until 1994, when he became the principal of NorthWood Middle School.
Roelandts’ retirement will take effect July 1 and the search has begun for his successor.
Sabo said the district is accepting applications for the position through Friday, April 12, and has received about a half dozen applications, two of which are from acting middle school assistant principals.
Sabo said he hopes to bring a recommendation to the board at its first meeting in May.
