Memorial graduates have spots in NCAA women’s tourney

Local basketball fans, don’t forget the women’s tournament.

Two Memorial High graduates — Akyah Taylor and Brionna Barnett — may get a chance to participate this weekend’s in the opening round of the NCAA women’s championships.

Taylor is a red-shirt freshman at Michigan State, which plays Marist on Saturday in College Park, Md., while Barnett is a freshman at Wisconsin-Green Bay, which takes on LSU in Baton Rouge, La., on Sunday.

In 16 appearances for the Spartans, the 5-11 Taylor has averaged 1.6 points and 2.3 rebounds in 7.8 minutes of action per game. MSU (24-8) is a No.5 seed in the Bridgeport (Conn.) Regional while Marist (26-6) is a No.12 seed. The two squads play Saturday at 1:50 p.m.

Michigan State is making its fifth straight NCAA tournament trip and 10th in the last 11 years. The winner between the Spartans and Red Foxes will take on the survivor of Maryland (24-7) and Quinnipiac (30-2) on Monday.

Barnett, a true freshman for the Phoenix, is a 5-6 guard who averages 1.1 points and 6.1 minutes a game. GB (29-2) is an 11th seed while sixth-seeded LSU is 20-11 in the Spokane Regional. Their game will tipoff at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Green Bay, which is riding a 24-game win streak, has reached the NCAA field eight times in the last 10 years. The GB-LSU victor will line up opposite the winner between Penn State (25-5) and Cal Poly (21-10) on Tuesday.
