ELKHART — Dozens of accidents have been reported in the Elkhart County area during this morning’s commute, according to 911 dispatchers.

Elkhart County 911 Communication director Egbert Dijkstra said there were 30 accidents prior to 8:30 a.m. Nine of the accidents reported so far have had a personal injury, he said.

In Elkhart, there have been about five accidents reported, according to dispatch.

The area of U.S. 20 near S.R. 19 was closed at 7 a.m. because of an accident that involved several vehicles. Dijkstra said the road has reopened since, but there have been several other accidents on the road.

The National Weather Service reports a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain was expected to hazardous road travel this morning, with light snow and ice accumulations. Rain is predicted for this afternoon as temperatures warm.
