Vacuum cleaner store in new home after being displaced by overpass project
The store had been located at Prairie and Main streets south of the city center. Widening of Prairie on either side of the planned overpass just to the north, however, will require that space, hence the move.
The vacuum cleaner store moved on March 8 after finalizing the sale of the old property to the city of Elkhart, according to John Augustino, the store’s owner. The store’s telephone number remains the same, 294-1835.
The overpass will allow freer movement of autos on Prairie Street there, and Augustino said stoppages due to passing trains had been an issue at the old business location. Several homes and other properties are also to be abandoned due to the project.
ABK first opened in 1964 and Augustino, who took over from his father, has owned it since 1983.
