GOSHEN — A handful of 4-H Junior Leaders and sponsors took their Sunday afternoon to help out students in the Goshen school system on the free-and-reduced lunch program.
The group went to Walmart to purchase groceries that they took back to the Elkhart County Community Center on the fairgrounds to prepare spring-break food packages.
The packages are made possible through a grant from the Walmart Foundation. This year, the 4-H group received $11,500 to provide packages of food for children in Goshen schools who are in the free- and reduced-lunch program.
The club prepares packages throughout the school year, but Sunday’s event was the largest single-day preparation the group will do this year. The boxes of food made Sunday will be given to 34 students for Goshen’s spring break, which begins March 27 and ends April 5. There will be enough food to provide three meals a day to the students over their eight-day break, plus two weekends.
The group spent more than $3,600 at Walmart on food ranging from cereal and pancake mix, meat, rice, beans and soup, among many other items. Laurie Sula, one of the club’s leaders, said Church Community Services would also be providing bread for the boxes.
“We do try to make sure that we get some wholesome things for the kids that are nutritionally balanced,” Sula said. She added that they also purchased some snacks, such as cookies, for the students as well. “It is spring break; they need to have some fun,” she explained.
The schools will pick up the packages next week in preparation for the break, at which time they will be distributed to 34 students the club helped.
