ELKHART — A winter storm that swept through Elkhart County moved from the area overnight, but it left up to 8 inches of snow in some parts of the county.

According to the National Weather Service, snow accumulation in Goshen was of 7.8 inches over the last 24 hours. Snow accumulation in Millersburg was 6.3 inches, while Osceola recorded 8 inches.

Northeast of Elkhart, Constantine, Mich., had only 3 inches of snow.

The storm affected the evening commute Tuesday, March 5, with a large number of accidents reported. Between 4 and 7 p.m. there were 44 accidents reported throughout to the county. Between 7 p.m. and 9 a.m. there were 30 accidents that were reported, 13 of which were minor reports of cars that slid into a ditch.

The NWS’s forecast for Elkhart County Wednesday, March 6, is mostly cloudy with high temperatures reaching 34 degrees. The winter storm is moving east, bringing 6 to 10 inches of snow to areas including Washington, D.C., The storm is expected to continue on to the East Coast, bringing 2 to 8 inches of snow Wednesday evening.
