GOSHEN — Officials confirmed Tuesday, March 5, the cause of death for a woman who was shot and the man who shot her and shot himself Monday in downtown Goshen.

Elkhart County Coroner John White said Millicent Morros died of two gunshot wounds and Eric Haitsma died of a single gunshot wound. The manner of death for them was confirmed to be a homicide-suicide.

The Goshen Police Department was called at about 7:47 a.m. to the 100 of Fifth Street Monday. They found Morros, 48, and Haitsma, 51, laying motionless on a parking lot on the east side of the road.

According to a press release from police, Morros and Haitsma knew each other and had been in a relationship. They were seen arguing in the parking lot before the shooting. Goshen police said they had no record of Morros filing a domestic issue involving Haitsma.

Morros was on her way to work at the law firm Yoder Ainlay, Ulmer and Buckingham, which is across the street from where the shooting happened.

Haitsma was a Goshen police officer from 1990 to 1998. He later opened a business, Haitsma Lawn Care.

Arrangements for Haitsma are pending with Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home in Elkhart. Arrangements for Morros are not complete.
