Heavy snow complicates Tuesday evening commute

ELKHART – Winter Storm Saturn made Elkhart County roadways slippery for the evening commute Tuesday, March 5.

Elkhart County 911 Dispatch reported 44 traffic accidents between 4 and 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Among these accidents were eleven vehicles that slid off the roadway and four accidents involving injuries.

A dispatcher said she was still receiving calls for accidents at 7 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for northern Indiana ahead of the storm and predicted snow accumulation between 5 and 7 inches, with the heaviest snowfall from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 12 a.m. Wednesday.

The National Weather Service predicts a slight chance of snow showers on Wednesday, with skies clearing Thursday.

Clear skies will continue through the weekend with high temperatures reaching the mid-40s for Saturday and Sunday.
