So in true Notre Dame/UConn fashion, the Irish and the Huskies battled for 15 extra minutes before the No. 2 Irish could seal a 96-87 win over the No. 3 Huskies.
After trailing all but one minute of the first half, Notre Dame clawed its way back to a 4-point lead midway through the second half. From there, Notre Dame (27-2, 15-1 Big East) and UConn (28-2, 15-1 Big East) exchanged blows for the rest of the contest.
Diggins and McBride rallied the Irish in their home finale with 55 of Notre Dame’s 96 points, but a combination of ice-cold early shooting (as low as 12.5 percent) and being outscored 21-3 from behind the 3-point arc made every possession a battle.
McBride hit Notre Dame’s only 3-pointer of the night as time expired in the first overtime. When she fouled out in the second overtime, Diggins and junior Natalie Achonwa took control.
Diggins finished with a team-high 29 points, while McBride scored 26.
The win seals the regular season Big East title for Notre Dame.
