The Eddies play host to a five-team Class B District tournament beginning Monday, March 4. Edwardsburg (15-5) takes on Sturgis (11-8) in the first game.
Fifth-year coach Dan Gunn has watched his Eddies perform steadily, losing back-to-back games only once, with a squad that features five senior starters — 6-foot-4 Central Michigan University-bound Josh Kozinski (23.1 points and 6.0 rebounds per game), 6-3 Patrick Harvey (7.9 ppg, 4.8 rpg), 5-9 Jason Schimpa (5.8 ppg. 2.2 assists per game), 6-5 Matt Griesinger (5.7) and 6-2 Eric Richardson (5.1 ppg).
The deep cast also features 6-2 freshman Dante Razzano (6.2 ppg) and 6-3 sophomore Jackson Gaideski (4.7 ppg), with contributions from 5-9 junior Dylan Hulett, 6-1 junior Grant Szalweski and 6-4 sophomore Joe Queener.
“I thought we would be a consistent team,” said Gunn, who is in his 37th overall season as a varsity head coach. “The teams that are the most consistent — night after night — those are the ones that have been the most consistent for me.”
This has been a season that saw Gunn get his 500th career coaching victory and had Kozinski pass Brett Hoover, Glen Houser and Kevin Marvel on the way to the top of the Eddies all-time scoring list.
The Eddies, which went 7-3 and tying for Western Division runner-up in the first season of the new-look Wolverine Conference, have played uptempo on offense and applied more pressure on defense.
“The kids like to play (fast) and it’s something that fits this group. I like that style,” said Gunn. “Before, we did not have the depth to play pressure defense.
“We’ve got good size and that helps a lot. The senior leadership has been very good.”
Edwardsburg is coming off a 57-48 Thursday win at Allegan.
Sturgis wound up the regular season with a 58-34 win against Bronson. Chance Stewart netted a career-high 31 points for the Trojans.
While they did not play during the regular season, Edwardsburg and Sturgis did see each other last summer and during a preseason scrimmage.
The Eddies are 2-2 against the rest of the district field — 2-0 vs. Three Rivers (72-46 and 64-36) with narrow losses to Paw Paw (60-58) and Vicksburg (55-51). Edwardsburg’s last boys basketball district title came in 1987-88. The winner this year advances to the Marshall Regional March 11 and 13.
