GOSHEN — Goshen College’s student-run radio station has snagged the title of the best college radio station in the country for the second time in three years.

General manager Jason Samuel and six of the 30 students who run WGCS 91.1 The Globe traveled to New York City this weekend for the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s annual conference. There, the radio station won the Abraham and Borst Best College Radio Station in the Nation award.

Samuel attributed the station’s success to the group of dedicated students who work on air and behind the scenes to deliver news and music to listeners.

“I’m extremely proud of our students,” Samuel said. “They have worked so hard, especially our three seniors, Kelsey James, Benjamin Kelly and Jimmy Cassoday, who have been part of both of these national championships. I’m happier than I could ever be to see that these students are being recognized for their work.”

The Globe has been broadcasting from Goshen College since 1958. The radio station also won top honors at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s conference in 2011.

“What they’re doing for the music scene and for this community is extraordinary, and it’s great to see the professionals recognizing that,” said Ignition Music owner Steve Martin, who works closely with the radio station to put on concerts at his downtown Goshen record store and music venue.
