ELKHART — Like the game that preceded it, the underdog team stunned the favorite in the Elkhart Sectional semifinal Friday, March 1.

Unlike the Concord-Warsaw game, there weren’t three overtimes or a dramatic last-second shot.

The slugfest between Northridge and Goshen still lasted nearly as long. The two teams combined for 55 total points and 44 total free throw attempts in the fourth quarter alone.

Northridge (10-11) blew past Goshen (14-8), 62-46, at North Side Gym and will face Warsaw Saturday for the sectional title.

Much of Northridge’s success came from relentless penetration and holding Goshen scoreless in the third quarter. The end result was much different for the Raiders than its meeting with Goshen earlier this season, when the Redskins won 59-53.

“We’re a different team from then,” Northridge coach Ronnie Thomas said. “That (game) started our long stretch of losses there, we kind of found ourselves offensively and defensively, we defined our roles. I think our guys didn’t want to go home yet. Our seniors led the way and they didn’t want to end their careers just yet.”

The Redskins rallied back from its scoreless third quarter to hit three quick 3-pointers and 27 total points, but the damage was done. After trailing by 20 early in the fourth, Goshen clawed back within nine points. By then, it had to foul Concord to stop the clock.

“Northridge played great defense and they deserved to win because of that,” Goshen coach Brian Bechtel said. “Their defense was physical. They made it tough for us to get shots inside.”

Joey Ganyard led the Raiders with 16 points, while teammate Austin Moniot hit 9 of 9 free throws and finished with 15. Sam Stegelmann and Jesse Good both had 12 for Goshen.
