GOSHEN — A woman is in critical condition just about eight hours after she was airlifted from the scene of an accident early Friday morning, March 1.

Police responded to the accident at about 12:45 a.m. on S.R. 15, just half a mile north of the Goshen city limits.

According to a report from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Billie Jo Star Rippey, 34, of Middlebury, was driving north on S.R. 15, south of C.R. 126 at an “unreasonable speed,” when she lost control of the car.

The car, a 2007 Dodge Caliber, went off the road to the west, hitting a tree and a utility pole. The vehicle also struck a Frontier phone junction box and mailbox. The collision caused extensive damage to the vehicle, the utility pole and the junction box.

Rippey was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend via Medflight with severe internal injuries and a head injury. She was unconscious at the time she was airlifted.

The Sheriff’s Department Crash Investigation Team is investigating the crash further and took measurements at the scene.
