GOSHEN — An Elkhart man appeared in court Thursday, Feb. 28, on charges in a robbery he allegedly committed two months ago.

Maurice Thomas, 23, appeared for his initial hearing at the Elkhart Circuit Court. He was charged with one count of robbery while armed with a deadly weapon, a Class B felony.

On Dec. 9, 2012, police responded to a residence in Elkhart where a woman reported she had been robbed by Thomas. The victim told police she had answered the door and saw it was Thomas, according to the probable cause affidavit for Thomas’ case. She said she knew him because she had gone to school with him. Thomas and another man entered the home. While one of the men went through her belongings the other held a gun on her. They took a gold necklace, a Playstation, a laptop and a BB gun.

But at the time of the robbery Thomas was out on bond for another case.

Thomas had been arrested for battery and booked at the Elkhart County Jail on June 9. He was charged at Superior Court 1 with one count of domestic battery in the physical presence of a child, and he bailed out on June 18.

After Thomas failed to appear for his court hearings, Judge Evan Roberts issued a warrant for his arrest Dec. 4. Police arrested Thomas on Dec. 16, just a week after the alleged robbery.

Thomas has a court hearing on the battery charge Monday, March 3, at Superior Court 1. He has another hearing March 28 on the robbery charge. He remains booked at the Elkhart County Jail on a $75,000 bond for his Circuit Court case and a $15,000 bond for his Superior Court 1 case.
