ELKHART — Thomas W. Romberger, 83, of Elkhart, died at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Elkhart General Hospital.
Tom was born March 28, 1929, in Elkhart to William and Marjorie (Rossilet) Romberger. On Nov. 27, 1960, he married Sandra R. Monschein.
She survives along with daughter Jodi (Michael) Bane of South Bend; son David (Jill) of Elkhart; and three grandsons, Dylan, Ryan and Patrick.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Rebecca Thornburg.
He graduated from Indiana University and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War.
Tom retired from the Elkhart County Public Service Department after 18 years. He was a county commissioner for 16 years. He worked briefly at Miles Lab and was a vice president of St. Joseph Valley Bank, where he worked for 25 years.
Tom had a strong commitment to the community. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was an usher, served on the church counsel and was chairman of the fellowship board. He was a former member of the Elks, Jaycees and Elkhart Noon Lions Club, where he served as treasurer.
Tom was a board member of Elkhart General Hospital, ADEC and the American Lung Association. He was chosen as Elkhart’s Ambassador to the Netherlands and was chairman of the City of Elkhart Centennial Parade.
Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. followed immediately by a celebration of life service Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home.
