ELKHART — Two Elkhart Police officers were issued disciplinary notices following an accident that involved a squad car earlier this month.

Cpl. Jacqueline Barth was issued a written reprimand. She was driving a squad car Feb. 3 at about 11:50 p.m. behind a business on North Main Street near Jackson Boulevard. When she attempted to make a turn she felt her squad car slide on the snow. According to a report of the accident, she attempted to shimmy the wheel to regain traction, but the car continued to slide until it hit the curb.

The car, a 2009 Ford Crown Victoria, received some damage on the front side and on front driver’s side tire. The tire rim was scraped, the front driver’s panel had two scrapes about an inch long and a part of the tire was dragging on the ground. The report said the estimated damage to the vehicle was about $1,000.

The supervisor at the time of her shift, Sgt. David Baskins, was also issued a disciplinary notice. According to a letter from the EPD to the Elkhart City Board of Public Safety, Baskins failed to report to the scene of the accident. He received a one-day suspension without pay.
