ELKHART — A man who was taken to the hospital following a rollover crash told police he was looking down at his cell phone before the accident.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department responded to the crash around 8:12 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, just south of Elkhart.

According to an initial accident report, Brody Winebrenner, 31, of South Bend, was southbound on S.R. 19, south of C.R. 32, when his car drifted off the roadway, striking a ditch before rolling, hitting a utility pole and landing upside-down. The impact brought down some power lines.

He was taken to the hospital with facial lacerations, wrist pain and a possible broken right hand. The car received damage to the front end, roof and driver’s side.

Winebrenner told police he last recalled being at S.R. 19 and U.S. 20, and that he was distracted by his cell phone ringing. He had looked down at his phone to see who had called.

He said that though he had looked at his phone, he did not use it. Winebrenner was issued a warning for using his cell phone while driving.
