DUNLAP — The stage was set for some of that old McCuen Magic — a virtual full house of about 3,400 fans on Senior Night, the band blaring, a pregame get-silly slam-dunk fest featuring students, a flash mob of moms dancing during halftime to “Gangnam Style” — and fittingly, fourth-year starter Franko House delivering the greatest magic of all, from long distance.

House’s heave and swish from about 70 feet — right around the opposition free throw line — as time expired in the third quarter swelled Concord’s lead by a third to 37-28 and the Minutemen went on to beat Westview 52-38 in each team’s boys high school basketball regular-season finale Friday, Feb. 22, at McCuen Gym.

“I had to out-do (Tim Yoder),” House said with a smile of the Concord student who hit a half-court shot during the pregame show. “Really, I was just frustrated at the time, so I just threw it down there, and it happened to go in.”

There was a short debate among the officials over whether the shot should count — House connected off a soft and seemingly innocuous inbound from Adam Glanders after the Warriors had just made a free throw with just 0.5 of a second showing on the clock — but it did.

House finished with game highs of 20 points and nine rebounds as the Minutemen improved to 19-1 overall and closed a perfect 10-0 at home.

“What a fun atmosphere,” Concord coach Steve Austin said, “and then you add two teams playing well, it just creates a great atmosphere, for fans, players, coaches, everybody. That’s what it’s all about.”

The Warriors dropped to 18-3.

Sophomore Filip Serwatka scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the winners, while senior DuWhan Alford disrupted Westview’s offense to the tune of a half-dozen steals.

Jordyn Bontrager paced the Warriors with 15 points and five assists. Chandler Aspy added 10 points.
