An Elkhart man faces up to 12 years imprisonment on several felony counts for “terrorizing” his family at their Elkhart area home, the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s office said in a press release Thursday, Feb. 21.

Robert King, 60, was convicted by a jury on Jan. 8 after a two-day trial on three counts of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon and another count of attempted aggravated battery. The prosecutor’s office had sought a minimum of 40 years imprisonment for King, while Elkhart Superior Court 3 Judge George Biddlecome on Feb. 7 sentenced the man to a 12-year term, according to the press release.

“With credit time under Indiana law, King may be released back into the Elkhart community in less than six years,” said the press release.

The press release described King as “terrorizing” his family the night of June 4, 2010. After drinking “numerous” beers, King awoke his wife at knifepoint, demanding to know where $60 in family money was. Armed with a handgun, he subsequently threatened to shoot his son and prevented his wife of 26 years from leaving their home, an apartment.

“King’s 14-year-old daughter heard her mother’s screams and came to her aid, offering to pay her father for the missing money,” said the press release. “King, however, was not interested in the money and, as his daughter watched, King sprayed his wife with lighter fluid and attempted to light her on fire.”

The attempt to burn the woman failed and Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department officials subsequently arrived and took King into custody.
