ELKHART — An Elkhart woman was taken to IU Health Goshen Hospital after a two-vehicle crash at C.R. 4 and C.R. 17 around 7:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Donald Hemler, 62, of Union, Mich., was driving southbound on C.R. 17 in the left turn lane at the intersection of C.R. 4 to get onto the Indiana Toll Road. Elizabeth Rowland, 32, was driving northbound on C.R. 17 heading straight through the intersection at C.R. 4. Hemler turned in front of Rowland and the two collided.

Airbags deployed in both vehicles and both drivers were wearing seatbelts. There were no passengers involved.

Rowland was transported to the hospital and treated for complaints of pain to the right hip, left knee, left elbow and left shoulder. Hemler was treated at the scene for swelling in his left knee and a cut above his left eye.

Both cars sustained damage to their front ends.

Hemler told police that he wasn’t sure what the traffic light was indicating for him. A witness at the scene said there was a green signal for both directions on C.R. 17. Hemler was issued a citation for failure to yield right of way.
