INDIANAPOLIS — State championship hopes are still alive for a Jimmie, a Blue Blazer, a Minuteman and two Kingsmen.

By winning Friday night, Feb. 15, five of 15 area wrestlers survived the first round of the 75th annual IHSAA State Finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. A crowd of 8,747 witnessed the action.

Moving to the quarterfinals on to compete Saturday, Feb. 16, are Jimtown senior Nick Crume (35-0 at 126), Elkhart Central senior Johnny Tredway (30-6 at 160), Concord junior DeLawrence Gayfield (37-3 at 113), Penn junior Zach Davis (43-6 at 113) and Penn freshman Drew Hildebrandt (40-10 at 106).

Crume is at the State Finals for the fourth time —he was third in both 2011 and 2012). He moved on with a convincing 16-0 technical fall victory against Beech Grove sophomore Phil Smiley. His quarterfinal foe will be Center Grove junior Tyler Reener (41-3).

Davis is back at the state meet for the third time. He was eliminated in the first round in his first two appearances. Davis topped Evansville Harrison senior Mathew Matison for the right to meet Perry Meridian junior Jacob Cottey (38-1) in the quarterfinals.

Tredway, Gayfield and Hildebrandt were all making their State Finals debuts.

Tredway scrapped to a 4-2 win against Evansville Mater Dei senior Mahlon Parkinson. Highland senior Mark Maldonado (37-1) will be Tredway’s quarterfinals opponent.

Gayfield rolled to a 9-1 major decision against Indianapolis Crispus Attucks junior Charles Baker (40-4). Next up for Gayfield is a quarterfinals bout against Hanover Central junior Stevan Micic (45-0).

Hildebrandt moved into the quarterfinals, where he will take on New Palestine freshman Chad Red (45-0), by scoring a 2-1 win against Floyd Central senior Terrence Kennedy (39-1).

The 10 area grapplers eliminated from the tournament were Fairfield freshman Blake Glogouski (106), Fairfield senior Brett Martz (126), Jimtown senior Cody Koebel (132), Penn junior Alex Rinehart (138), Penn sophomore Joey Mammolenti (145), Penn senior Trevor Manspeaker (152), Jimtown senior Tanner Adams (170), NorthWood senior Zach Telschow (182), Penn freshman Kobe Woods (220) and Goshen senior Hayden Schmucker (Hwt).

The quarterfinals are at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16. The consolation round is slated for 5 p.m. with the finals at 7:30 p.m.

Three coaches with ties to the area all coached winning wrestlers Friday.

Brian Seltzer, who left Elkhart Memorial for Lawrence North, saw Juwan Bartlett move on at 138.

Aaron Moss, a state champion for Memorial in 1993 and now the head coach at Ben Davis, watched his son, Levi Moss, stay unbeaten at 132. The Giants’ other state entry — heavyweight Norman Oglesby — lost.

Jimtown High School graduate Matt Behling, the head coach at Culver Academy, saw Anthony McHugh triumph at 138.
