ELKHART — The light dusting of snow that temporarily blanketed much of Michiana Friday morning, Feb. 15, will pale in comparison to what is expected this weekend.

Arctic air coming off Lake Michigan will rev up the lake-effect snow machine Friday night and will produce localized heavy amounts of snow through Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Snowfall is expected to increase in coverage and intensity late Friday night and continue into Saturday morning, the weather service said.

Snow will taper off Sunday.

Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hours are possible from some of the most intense snow bands coming off Lake Michigan, the weather service said.

A lake effect snow advisory has been issued for Friday night to late Saturday night for much of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.

Total accumulations by Sunday are expected to range from 3 to 7 inches, but some areas close to the lake could experience even more.

Overnight lows through Saturday are expected to be in the teens while highs will hover in the mid to upper 20s.
