The memorial wall at 508 Oakland Ave. is for sale for $35,000. Current owner Don Fisher said he owes $500 back taxes on the property and cannot afford to keep it.
Jason Moreno said he is working with Fisher and has set up an account at First Source Bank to receive donations to save the memorial.
People wishing to donate to the effort can make a donation at any First Source Bank location.
Moreno said he will also ask the Elkhart City Council for a tax abatement on the property as long as it continues to be used as a memorial.
“It not only memorializes veterans but also firefighters and police,” Moreno said. “It’s only appropriate to have something to honor their sacrifice for the community.”
