Now, due to a lack of funding and owing back taxes, Fisher has to sell the memorial.
The Wall of Heroes, located at 508 Oakland Ave., is now for sale. The asking price is $35,000 and includes the wall and the lot on which it sits.
“I’ve been tossing this around for a while and shed a few tears,” Fisher said of his decision to sell. “It was a dream of mine and I hate to make this decision.”
He owes about $500 in back taxes on the property and it will be put up for auction if he cannot pay.
“I would rather see it go to an organization that could keep it up,” Fisher said.
He offered to sell the memorial to the City of Elkhart but Mayor Dick Moore told Fisher the city did not have the funds. Fisher said he has been speaking to local veterans organizations in hopes that one of them will but it.
Fisher said he paid $10,000 for the lot and has spent an additional $70,000 on the memorial itself, which displays the photos of 300 fallen Indiana soldiers, police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians.
Fisher, a veteran of the U.S. Army, served from 1958 to 1968.
Anyone interested in purchasing the memorial can contact Fisher at 574-575-6078.
