DUNLAP — Concord coach Steve Austin and his staff surprised the team and McCuen Gym by wearing Hawaiian shirts and even named a play Mahalo.

That word means “thank you.”

Minutemen boys basketball fans were thankful that they were there to see Concord (16-1) go on a 30-4 run spanning the middle parts of the second and third quarters on the way to a 74-50 rout of visiting South Bend Riley (11-6).

“It was one of our better games,” said Austin, who was given a ball before the contest commemorating his recent 400th career victory. “We did a nice job offensively and defensively after the first half of the first quarter.”

Austin said switching to a 1-2-2 defensive alignment curtailed the Wildcats’ dribble-penetration.

The Minutemen were up 19-16 when they launched their run. The Wildcats went nearly 7 1/2 minutes without a point and trailed 49-20 before finding the basket again at the 4:3 mark of the third period.

Franko House (23 points), Adam Glanders (14), Filip Serwatka (13), DuWhan Alford (11) and Ramon Johnson (9) all contributed to a balanced attack for a Concord squad that snapped out of an early funk to win for the eighth straight time and move to 8-0 at home.

Riley’s offense was paced by Reontre’ Lawrence (12 points), Brock Cosey (10) and Ja’mare Washington (9).
