Bethel College women shock No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

MISHAWAKA — The Bethel College women’s basketball team shocked No. 1 (NAIA, Division 2) Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday, beating the Wildcats, 50-48, in Crossroads League action on Saturday.

Trailing by one, senior Chrissy Hooks hit a 3-point shot with just under 10 seconds to play to give Bethel the lead. It was Hooks’ only basket of the game in just over five minutes of action.

Laura Johnson led Bethel with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Katy Stuppy added eight points and five assists for the 15th-ranked Pilots.

Paige Smith had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, who shot just 30 percent from the field (15-50). Jimtown graduate Emma Stahl started the game for Wesleyan but was held scoreless. The loss drops the Wildcats to 26-2.

The victory was the first for a Bethel women’s team against an opponent ranked No. 1 in NAIA.
