GOSHEN — Northridge and Bethany Christian’s middle and high schools will have teams competing Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Regional Science Olympiad Tournament at Goshen College.

In Science Olympiad competitions, teams of students compete in a variety of science-related challenges. Many call on students to use hands-on skills, such as a challenge in which teams build a cantilevered wooden structure or another in which students must create an experiment and report based on several objects presented to students at the contest. Others require students to answer questions about a topic, such as rocks and minerals, forestry or anatomy.

Out of the eight middle school teams and 11 high school teams competing at Goshen College Saturday, three in each level will be able to go on to the state competition at Indiana University Bloomington on Saturday, March 16, according to information on the college’s Science Olympiad webpage. One more team in each level will be selected to go on to the Wild Card Tournament at Ivy Tech Community College in Lafayette on March 9. The national tournament will be May 17-18 at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

The contest makes a full day for teams, with registration opening at 7:30 a.m. and the awards ceremony finishing around 4:45 p.m. The events will take place in Goshen College’s Music Center, administration building, Union, Wyse Hall and science building.

Altogether there will be 23 different activities in the competition, though several are designated for only middle school teams or only high school teams.
