MIDDLEBURY — Eighteen choirs from throughout the Midwest will be at Northridge High School this Saturday, Feb. 9, for the fourth annual Northridge Choral Invitational.

The first preliminary performance starts at 8 a.m. ending with the Northridge show choirs Northern Lights and Starlights performing in an exhibition at 5 p.m., according to Northridge Director Daniel Baker. Then, the top five mixed show choirs and the top three unisex show choirs from the day’s preliminary round will compete in a finals contest starting at 7 p.m.

Northridge, as hosts, are not allowed to compete, but will perform as an exhibition. Fairfield High School’s mixed group and girls group are the others from Elkhart County that will be at the invitational Saturday.

Two schools will have concert choirs competing, though most groups at the competition Saturday are show choirs. Show choirs are groups of 25 to 50 members singing with full choreographed dancing, Baker explained.

“What you will see on Saturday is full dancing, full singing, props, lights, sequins and just about anything you can think of — all performed by high school students,” he said.

Tickets are $10 per session or $15 to watch all day. Kids younger than 10 years old are admitted free. All choirs perform in the Northridge High School Performing Arts Center.
