ELKHART – Two people were uninjured after a one-vehicle rollover crash on East Beardsley Avenue on Thursday, Feb. 7.

Brett Smith said he purchased his gray 1987 Chevrolet station wagon about three hours before the afternoon crash.

Smith and Zuri Que were driving east on Beardsley Avenue at about 25 mph when the car in front of them braked abruptly.

Smith tried to slow down, but the brakes gave out.

“The pedal just went straight to the ground,” he said.

“I didn’t want to hurt anyone,” he said, so he tried to swerve to the right. The vehicle slid on the snow next to the road and fell down the hill into Beardsley Park, where it flipped upside down.

The two were shaken, but unhurt.

Smith said he was happy no one was injured.

“(The car) was working fine when I bought it,” Smith said. “We took it for a test drive and the brakes and engine worked fine.”
