ELKHART — A winter weather advisory was cancelled Monday afternoon for Elkhart County, according to the National Weather Service.

But roads may continue to be treated throughout the afternoon and heading into the evening and they may still be snow covered and slick in some areas.

Todd Anderson, assistant director of the 911 Communication Center in Elkhart County, said there have been about 25 reported accidents in the county since 4 a.m., all of which were slide-offs or involving property damage. In Elkhart City, there have been about eight reports of accidents, all of which were minor, since 4 a.m. according to dispatch.

Snow is still expected to fall this afternoon, leaving untreated roads covered and slick. Visibility may be reduced at times, according to the NWS.

The Indiana Department of Transportation TrafficWise system shows road conditions are still “difficult,” with snow-covered roadways, in Elkhart and LaGrange Counties.

A winter weather system that moved into the Midwest from Iowa this morning and early afternoon will have moved from the area by late afternoon. Snow accumulations near the lake are expected to be from five to 10 inches by late Monday evening. In other areas, however, snow accumulation is expected to be of two to five inches.

In the areas of St. Joseph County in Indiana and Cass County in Michigan, snow accumulations of four to seven inches are expected.
