ELKHART — Donald R. Smith, 95, of Elkhart, passed away at 4:15 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Golden Living Center.
He was born May 18, 1917, in LaGrange County, to Ernest Earl and Florence Matilda (Rinehart) Smith.
On June 30, 1960, in Elkhart he married Eva Johnson. She preceded him in death July 19, 1990, in Elkhart.
Surviving are eight nephews, Richard Smith, Robert Smith, Jack Smith, Jim Smith, Ernest Smith, Ralph Smith, Gary Smith and Buryl Grossman; a niece, Kay Lashua; and his caregivers, Janet Brownbridge and Breanna White, both of Mishawaka.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Grossman; three brothers, Buryl, Howard and Lorin Smith; and five nieces Joann Trammel, Barbara Smith, Jayne Bade, Alice Hirschy and Linda Hirschy.
Don was a member of the Elkhart Lions Club and enjoyed fishing. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II. Don was employed as a warehouse manager at Brown Stove Works.
He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and a Notre Dame football and basketball fan. He enjoyed birdwatching, especially red cardinals.
Cremation will take place at Elkhart Cremation Services. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at Rice Cemetery. Pastor Brian Whidden with the Calvary Assembly of God will preside.
Military honors will be rendered by the Elkhart DAV Chapter 19. Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association.
