GOSHEN — Naomi E. Winter, 96, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 29, 2013, at Greencroft HealthCare, Goshen.

She was born May 18, 1916, in New Carlisle, Ohio, to Elmer D. and Ruth H. (Lutz) Mast.

She married Chester B. Winter on June 27, 1940, in Elkhart. He preceded her in death in 1985.

She is survived by her children, Jane (John) Modesitt of Syracuse and James (Sandra) Winter of Monticello; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A lifelong educator, she graduated from North Central College, Naperville, Ill., and received her master’s degree from Indiana University in Bloomington. She taught English at Northwest, John Marshall and Crispus Attucks high schools, before retiring in 1981 as head of the English department for the listed schools.

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen.

Friends may also call from 10 a.m. until the 1:30 p.m. funeral service Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel, 5377 E. Washington St., Indianapolis. The Rev. David Herr of Calvary United Methodist Church will officiate.

Entombment will follow at Washington Park East, Indianapolis.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Indianapolis Symphonic Orchestra.
