Elkhart County Sheriff Brad Rogers will share his views supporting gun rights on a CNN program dedicated to the gun issue.

In a post on his Facebook page this morning, Jan. 31, he indicated that he, among several others, was invited to appear on the CNN show Anderson Cooper 360, hosted by journalist Anderson Cooper. Cooper will moderate a “town hall”-style program titled “Guns Under Fire,” to air at 8 p.m. this evening.

“I will provide the Constitutional Sheriff perspective,” Rogers said in his Facebook post. Responding to an Elkhart Truth query this morning, he e-mailed back, saying he was boarding an airplane and would try to call later with additional comment.

According to the website of the CNN show, “Guns Under Fire” will “gather important voices in the debate to talk about what must happen to achieve a common objective: less gun violence in America.”

Aside from Rogers, the panelists to appear include:

• Sandy Froam, a former president of the National Rifle Association

• Colin Goddar, a victim who survived the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007.

The discussion will take place at George Washington University.

In a Jan. 24 post on his Facebook page, Rogers expressed strong support for gun rights. “The more people who are carrying firearms for legal purposes, the more polite our society will be,” he wrote.

Gun control, he said, is not an issue that’s within the domain of the federal government. “The issue of any gun laws should be the individual states,” he wrote.

Even states, though, have limitations, he continued, noting a section of the Indiana Constitution that says people “shall have the right to bear arms, for the defense of themselves and the State.”

Rogers encourages gun owners to get proper training and to “have the ability” to keep firearms from children.
