Gyuri Lee of Penn High School and Wendy Sandoval of Elkhart Central are two of five nominees for the prestigious “best in show” award in the northwest Indiana and lower southwest Michigan region.
One of the five will be named best in the region and be honored at the national ceremony.
Sandoval created her piece, “Hell Above,” by covering mat board with pages from a book, then burning some edges and using ashes of burnt pages in the piece too.
“I wanted to make the house look really old and broken down,” she said.
She made the piece for a class assignment but was inspired by album art from the band Pierce the Veil, which features the image of a crumbling house. The title of her piece also came from a song by the band, she noted.
Lee’s piece, an oil painting of a nude girl covering her face, is titled “Let it Out.”
The public can view those pieces and other winners at the 2013 Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition at the Warner Gallery at the South Bend Museum of Art from Friday through March 2. This Friday’s opening will include a “Meet Me in the Gallery” event at the exhibition from 5:30 to 9 p.m., including live music, refreshments and a cash bar. Admission at the door is $5 with children less than 12, free. Museum members are free.
The regional awards ceremony will be Sunday at Bendix Theater, Century Center, 120 S. St. Joseph St., South Bend. Seventh and eighth-graders will be honored at 1:30 p.m., while high school awards will be at 2:30 p.m. A reception will immediately following the ceremonies in the Warner Gallery at the museum.
