Cleveland Township house damaged by early morning fire

ELKHART — Firefighters battled a house fire early this morning, Jan. 30, on the northwest side of Elkhart.

Cleveland Township Fire Department responded to a fire at 29706 C.R. 10 around 2:10 a.m., said assistant chief Mike Graham.

Graham said the fire originated from the utility room in the basement of the one-story house. The owners of the house, their children and pets were able to evacuate of the house without injuries.

Graham said the owners told him the power went out in the house and they smelled smoke. They promptly got out and called the fire department.

Graham said the fire department cleared from the scene around 5:30 a.m.

Damage from the fire was contained to the basement and a side of the house. There was also smoke damage that extended throughout the house.
