GOSHEN — LaCasa Inc. is once again accepting applications for the Help-A-House program.

The program, which is entering its 23rd year, helps low-income homeowners make repairs to their homes.

LaCasa, and most often volunteers from the community, work throughout the year replacing and repairing roofs, installing insulation and changing windows to help homeowners save on utility bills. They also replace doors, repair porches and even install wheelchair ramps when necessary.

“Most projects are projects that are volunteer-friendly,” said Bonnie Martin, Vice President of Development for LaCasa.

The projects are part of a year-round program, but a large part of the work is done in one day every year. This year, that day will be May 11.

Martin said the average year includes at least 15 projects, depending on staff, number of volunteers and level of funding.

The bulk of the financial support for the program comes from the city’s Community Development Block Grant, which effects the amount of work the organization is able to do, Martin explained.

Applications are now available to homeowners wishing to participate in the program.

There are three criteria homeowners must meet in order to be considered for the Help-A-House program: They must live within the city of Goshen, have resided in their home for at least the last 12 months and fall into the annual income limits specified by the program.

The income limits include $29,550 for a single person, $33,750 for a family of two, $37,950 for a family of three or $42,150 for a family of four. Income limits for families larger than four can be found on at huduser.org.

For those interested in applying to the program, applications can be obtained by calling LaCasa at 533-4450. Martin said applications must be turned in by March.
