NILES, Mich. — A mechanical failure caused an ultralight plane piloted by Elkhart resident Chris McKenna to crash on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Michigan State Police Sgt. Steve Barker told WSBT that another pilot and a Federal Aviation Administration representative investigating the crash found that a part on the plane’s “stick” was missing or not properly installed.

McKenna died in the crash northwest of the Jerry Tyler Memorial Airport.

Barker told WSBT that McKenna had built the plane.
