ELKHART — Elkhart County’s solid waste management district will sponsor a household hazardous waste collection from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Elkhart County Jail, near the intersection of C.R. 7 and C.R. 26.

The collection, which is open to Elkhart County residents, will accept waste including oil-based paints, motor oil, gasoline, pesticides, medications and household cleaners. If possible, materials should be in their original, labeled containers. Containers larger than five gallons will not be accepted. Other items that will not be accepted include electronics, tires, refrigerators and dehumidifiers. Contact the waste management district office for recycling information for these items.

Latex paint and alkaline batteries are no longer accepted at the monthly waste collection event. Latex paint can be dried by opening the can and adding cat litter, sand, shredded newspaper or other absorbents to speed up the process. The dried cans can be disposed with regular trash along with alkaline batteries.

The next household hazardous waste collection will be March 2.
