Flood watch issued for Tuesday and Wednesday

ELKHART — If you’re headed out yet tonight, you may be aware a thin coat of ice and slushy freezing rain has covered windows, cars and roads. In the next few days, all that melting slush and snow may very well lead to some flooding.

The National Weather Service freezing rain advisory remains in effect until midnight tonight for just about all of northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan. Occasional freezing rain will continue this evening, becoming regular, non-frozen rain by about midnight. Any ice accumulations tonight will melt off by Monday morning, as the temperature continues to rise above the freezing point.

With an expected high of about 47 Monday and 62 on Tuesday, any other frozen accumulations on the ground will be melted soon enough as well. Accordingly, the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch to take effect Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning for most of northern Indiana, southwestern Michigan and a few counties in northwest Ohio.

A combination of rain and melting snow may result in flooding of many local rivers and streams by Wednesday, according to the bulletin issued this afternoon. Total rainfall from tonight to Wednesday is expected to be between 2 and 4 inches.

Between all the newly melted snow, the falling rain and the frozen, nonabsorbent soil, you can expect to encounter some standing water on low-lying roads and properties as well.
