ELKHART — Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore’s office is reminding property owners and residents that they are responsible for snow removal along sidewalks.

According to the city, the owner or occupant of each property is required to remove all snow and ice in a timely manner from sidewalks running along the property. The sidewalks should be cleared of snow and ice within 24 hours of it accumulating.

Violations can result in a $25 fine.

“The city’s goal is not to penalize but rather to promote public safety,” a city news release stated. “You can help by fulfilling your obligations under the ordinance and by getting the word out to neighbors and friends about what is required of them.”

Anyone unable to comply due to age or physical disability is encouraged to apply for a hardship exception through the Building & Code Enforcement Department. For more information about exemptions call 294-5471.
