Brace yourself for freezing rain and potentially slick conditions Sunday.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory effective starting 3 p.m. Sunday, warning of sleet and freezing rain across northern Indiana, including Elkhart County. The advisory, issued this afternoon, Jan. 26, lasts until midnight, when temperatures are expected to rise.

“Travel conditions will likely deteriorate quickly once the sleet and freezing rain begin,” says the advisory, which also warns of icy walkways and driveways. Later, conditions will improve “when the temperature rises above freezing.”

Light ice accumulation could measure a tenth of an inch.

The NWS is also warning of possible minor flooding next week in Elkhart County and much of the rest of northern Indiana as temperatures rise, causing snow to melt early. Rain, heavy at times, is also forecast, compounding the situation, further exacerbated by frozen soil unable to soak up the moisture.

The varied factors “will likely lead to minor flooding of rivers ... streams ... and other low-lying areas,” says an NWS hydrologic outlook, issued this afternoon, Jan. 26. “Ponding of water on roadways will also likely occur.”

The exact timing of the possible flooding remains uncertain, the NWS said.

The NWS forecast in Elkhart calls for a high temperature Sunday of 30 degrees and an 80 percent chance of precipitation, sleet possibly mixed with freezing rain, mainly after 5 p.m. The rain and sleet may continue, but it should change to just rain after 1 a.m. Monday.

More rain is expected at least through Tuesday, accompanied by high temperatures in the 40s and 50s.
