GOSHEN — Herbert R. Maust, 84, Goshen, died at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at his residence.
He was born May 18, 1928, in Goshen to Douglas and Amanda (Martin) Maust. He married Rosemary (Slabaugh) Maust on Oct. 23, 1949, at North Main Mennonite Church, Nappanee.
Surviving are his wife, Rosemary; children Ronda (Steve) Chupp of Goshen, Rick (Tammy) Maust of Wakarusa, Becky (Dave) Schwartzentruber of Goshen, Rene (Mafra) Maust of Goshen; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were sisters Berniece Short, Arvilla Anglemyer and Anabel Hartman.
Herb was a 1946 graduate of Wakarusa High School and attended one year at Chicago Technical College. He was founder and owner of Wakarusa Farm Center for 40+ years, Wakarusa Fence Co. and in retirement worked at PolyVinyl Sales. He was a 45+ year member of the Elkhart County 4-H Board, serving as president in 1980 and heavily involved in many activities and events including being the rodeo producer for 30+ years. He volunteered for Switchboard Concern for eight years.
He attended Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church and formerly attended Yellow Creek Mennonite Church and was very active in church his whole life. In 2010, Herb received the Elkhart County Agricultural Society’s “Uncle Elmer” award.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, in the Fireside Room at Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church, 61115 S.R. 15, Goshen. A graveside service will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Yellow Creek Cemetery, with a memorial service following at 11 a.m. at Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church. The Rev. Harold Knight and the Rev. Peter Wiebe will officiate. Memorials may be directed to the Gideons.
