GOSHEN — Larry Hewitt, who was arrested in connection with the death of an Elkhart man, appeared for his initial hearing Thursday morning in Circuit Court.

Hewitt, 42, of 52940 York Hills Drive, Middlebury, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide, both Class C felonies, and faces up to eight years for each charge.

The charges are in connection with the death of Charles Wolfinger, 53, of Elkhart. Wolfinger’s body was pulled out of the Elkhart River behind Martin’s Super Market on July 17, 2012, shortly before 9 p.m.

Hewitt was arrested in West Memphis, Ark., and extradited to Indiana from the Crittenden County Jail in Arkansas. A warrant for his arrest was issued by the prosecutor’s office Dec. 26.

During his initial hearing, Hewitt was appointed a public defender. He is booked at the Elkhart Jail on a $25,000 bond. A bond report was requested to see if Hewitt’s bond can be reduced

Hewitt’s trial has been scheduled for April 22.
