MIDDLEBURY — A Northridge High School student has been expelled after bringing a handgun to school last Friday.

According to Superintendent Jane Allen, a few parents met with her Monday to tell her that their kids, students at the high school, had seen a student with a gun last Friday. Allen immediately contacted Northridge’s school resource officer, who contacted the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

It is state law that any student who brings a firearm into a school building is automatically expelled, Allen said.

Allen said the incident will likely not cause a change in protocol at the school, but said that school officials “will continue to be more vigilant.”

She explained that ever since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in December, Middlebury school officials have been more proactive about school safety, checking in on visitors to the school and more closely monitoring school cameras, for example.

Because the investigation is ongoing, Allen said she could not give more details about the incident.
