Slick roads causing accidents on frigid Elkhart County morning
Todd Anderson, assistant director of the 911 Communication Center in Elkhart County, said there have been about 14 accidents, which slide-offs and property damage accidents.
An accident that happened around 4:30 a.m. at C.R. 20 west of C.R. 9 sent one person to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. According to dispatch in Elkhart City, there had only been two property damage accidents reported since 3 a.m. this morning.
Conditions are bad on the U.S. 20 Bypass according to motorists calling Michiana News Channel, 95.3 FM. Several accidents were causing traffic delays.
According to the National Weather Service, Elkhart County is under a lake effect snow advisory that is expected to last until 1 p.m. A wind chill advisory remains under effect until 11 a.m.
Local accumulations of one to two inches of snow can be expected, with higher amounts mainly near and north of Highway 20.
Wind chill readings will be between 12 below and 17 below zero this morning.
The NWS said effectiveness of salt can diminish as temperatures drop, so roads can be expected to be slippery even after being treated.
