ELKHART — Plans by the city of Elkhart to knock down a building at the corner of South Main Street and Lusher Avenue are one hold.

The city was informed Friday morning that the owner of the building now intends to fix a deteriorating wall.

The building is located on the southwest corner of the intersection and was formerly the home of the San Marcos Market.

According to Elkhart County GIS, the owners listed for the building are Ruben and Alfredo Ponce. Efforts to contact them were unsuccessful Friday.

Bricks from the building’s north wall, which faces Lusher Avenue, have been falling off the facade in recent months and city officials consider it a public hazard.

City officials held a hearing on the property Dec. 5 and had already obtained an order to demolish the property. However, the owner had until Feb. 5 to decide what to do, said Dennis Mann, city building inspector.

Mann said the owners provided a plan to renovate the wall and the city is content to let that play out.

The city would rather have the building remain on the tax rolls rather than demolish it, Mann said.

The owners will have a 90-day period to complete the renovations, Mann said.

A marker on the building suggests it was constructed in 1913. In addition to serving as the San Marcos Mexican Restaurant, it was also known in recent years as Antojitos Mexicanos restaurant.
