More than $500,000 in property returned to Elkhart County residents in 2012

INDIANAPOLIS — Elkhart County residents claimed $538,003.46 in unclaimed property in 2012 and more remains to be claimed.

The Indiana Unclaimed website, which allows Indiana residents and businesses to search for unclaimed property in the state through Attorney General Greg Zoeller’s office.

Property is mostly money, from old wages, checking and savings accounts, investment earnings and insurance proceeds and benefits. Less than one percent of unclaimed property consists of physical items mostly found in safe-depost boxes. Abandonded vehicles and real estate is not considered unclaimed property.

Businesses have turned over the money to the attorney general from accounts that haven’t been active for several years.

There is more than $400 million waiting to be claimed.

People can search for unclaimed property online, via the mobile app (search for “Unclaimed Property” to download) or by calling 1-866-IN-CLAIM (1-866-462-5246). There is no charge for claiming money.
