ELKHART — Alvin Lee “Al” Irion, 73, of Elkhart, passed away Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Elkhart General Hospital.
Al was born Oct. 11, 1939, in Stockton, Calif., to the late Elmer and Linda (Baragno) Irion.
He served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force, where he was an airplane mechanic. During his enlistment, he met Joan Hutchcraft at Grissom Air Force Base in Peru. They were married on March 15, 1959, in Winamac.
Joan survives, along with their daughters, Sherry (Nick) Krcelich of Granger and Wendy (Martin) Andrade of Elkhart. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Brittany and Ashley Hopman and Alexis, Brianna and Martin “Junior” Andrade. Al is also survived by his brothers, Elmer Jr. (Janet) Irion and Jerry (Pam) Irion, both of Stockton.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Linda Irion.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elkhart, with the Rev. Glenn Kohrman presiding.
Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Al was the founder and owner of ALCO Tool Supply for more than 20 years until the sale of the business in 1993. He then opened JMI Tool Supply in Wakarusa and worked with the business several years until his illness forced his retirement. Al loved his business and created and patented the “I Love My Job” logo.
He was also a longtime member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
