MISHAWAKA — Elvera Lucille Schalliol, 92, of Mishawaka, died at 1 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, in her residence.

She was born July 20, 1920, in Madison Township, to Edward and Bernice (Baugher) Wordinger.

She married Carl Maxwell Schalliol Dec. 12, 1942.

Carl and Elvera resided on a farm in Mishawaka, where they raised a family and ran a dairy and grain farm. In 1951, Carl and Elvera’s friend Raymond Vervynckt came to work and live on the farm. He soon became part of the extended family and resided there for 48 years. Carl passed away July 9, 1988, and Ray passed away Dec. 23, 1999.

Surviving children are David (Barbara) Schalliol of Oakwood Ga., Marjorie (Jerry) Shultz of Ridgecrest, Calif., Sandra (Bob) Griggs of Osceola, Judy (Michael) Sheyko of Mishawaka and Jackie (Steve) Saylor of Cromwell; nine grandchildren, Joseph Shultz, Christine Braid, Steven Shultz, Sara Schalliol-Hodge, Jessica Griggs, Johnathon Sheyko, Benjamin Sheyko, Megan Saylor and Allison Saylor; and five great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are her husband; son Kevin Carl Schalliol in 1957; daughter Joann Elaine Schalliol in 1959; and siblings Leonard, Otho, Gerald and Kenny Wordinger.

Elvera was valedictorian of Jamestown High School, graduating in 1938.

In addition to farming, she worked at C.T.S., was a P.H.M. school bus driver and was an Avon representative.

Elvera was a very kind and generous person. She was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. Her family was the most important thing in her life and she cherished the time that she spent with them as they did with her. She enjoyed gardening, birds and cats. She especially enjoyed watching hummingbirds. She enjoyed playing a variety of games including euchre, dominos and sudoku. She also took pleasure in baking for family and friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret-Lienhart Funeral Home, 117 W. Waterford St., Wakarusa, and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. service Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, also at the funeral home. Pastor Jeff Truex will officiate and burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association, Humane Society of St. Joseph County or Pet Refuge.
