Sleet, freezing rain may hit Elkhart County overnight

ELKHART — Wintry weather is back after a short respite for Elkhart County.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Saturday forecasting a mix of sleet or freezing rain overnight Sunday.

Roads may be slick with ice as a result of this weather system.

On Sunday, snow and sleet is possible in north central and northeast Indiana.

Here is the text of the NWS statement:

“... WINTRY CONDITIONS TO RETURN LATE TONIGHT INTO SUNDAY...



A LARGE AREA OF RAIN WILL LIFT NORTHWARD ACROSS NORTHERN INDIANA AND SOUTHERN LOWER MICHIGAN LATE THIS EVENING AND CONTINUE INTO THE OVERNIGHT. COLDER AIR WILL WORK WEST TO EAST ACROSS THE AREA TONIGHT... WHICH WILL RESULT IN THE POSSIBILITY OF A MIX OF SLEET OR FREEZING RAIN LATE TONIGHT. THE BEST CHANCE OF THIS MIX OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN WILL BE GENERALLY AFTER 3 AM EST SUNDAY MORNING AND ROUGHLY WEST OF A LINE FROM LOGANSPORT INDIANA TO PLYMOUTH INDIANA TO THREE RIVERS MICHIGAN. THE PRECIPITATION SHOULD TAPER TO PERIODS OF LIGHT DRIZZLE OF FREEZING DRIZZLE TOWARD DAYBREAK SUNDAY. ANYONE TRAVELLING ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL INDIANA OR SOUTHWEST LOWER MICHIGAN SHOULD BE ALERT TO THE POSSIBILITY OF SLICK ROADS LATE TONIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING... AND TO ALLOW EXTRA TIME TO REACH DESTINATIONS.



ANOTHER WEAK SYSTEM WILL LIFT INTO NORTHERN INDIANA SUNDAY AFTERNOON. A MIX OF SNOW AND SLEET IS EXPECTED ACROSS PORTIONS OF NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST INDIANA... WITH MAINLY RAIN ACROSS NORTHWEST OHIO THROUGH MOST OF THE AFTERNOON. SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATIONS OF LESS THAN AN INCH ARE EXPECTED... BUT MAY RESULT IN SOME SLICK ROADS.”
